An Experience in Departmental Support for French
In the fall of 2008, the French Department at Cégep André-Laurendeau implemented "support and follow-up measures for students" that gave students registered in the first three French courses access to a variety of means aimed at helping them succeed in these courses and to pass the standard French test. This interview with a coordinator and a teacher illustrates how departmental measures were been implemented in this establishment, notably with an additional hour of French support, the creation of two distinct thresholds of success, the repositioning of a French remedial course for students who fail the language requirements of a course, and the use of common grading systems. The interviewees explain what these measures consist of, and go on to highlight the question of the supervisory hour, clearly demonstrating its impact on students. After three years of being involved in this project, of developing supervision measures, and of following up with students—taking into account the gaps that need to be filled that were brought to their attention by participants—the authors also highlight the positive results of the project, such as a measurable improvement in the students, some progress in their relationship to the language and the reaching of departmental objectives for support/supervision measures.
