The author, a dyed-in-the-wool humanist, discusses the issue of creativity, asserting that a hierarchical and Taylorist structure modelled on the world of work is subject to conservatism. Basing his argument on the works of a number of humanists, Chassé states that wonder, curiosity, and the desire to learn are satisfied when we feel accepted and our individuality is respected. According to Chassé, these conditions are required to create a stimulating learning environment that triggers the desire to learn. The article emphasizes the importance of creativity in innovation, both in science and technical fields as well as that of the arts (innovation being a sort of by-product of creativity). Focusing on the structure of the brain and the role of each of its hemispheres in the learning process, the author discusses various educational philosophies and their attendant practices. He then reviews obstacles to educational innovation, urging us to use educational activities to stimulate students’ desire to learn.
